Description:

This course will include information and techniques for addressing the drug and alcohol impaired driving problem and will bridge the gap between field sobriety and drug recognition training. It is intended for officers who have completed the 24-hour Field Sobriety Testing class. Much of the classroom instruction is devoted to hands-on practice.

The ARIDE program was developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) with input from the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police. ARIDE provides additional information to law enforcement officers on detecting impairment caused by more than just alcohol. Officers who have not received advanced or in-service training regarding drug impairment are often unable to identify these characteristics and may release an impaired driver. Students who complete this course will be more proficient with the battery of field tests (HGN, WAT, OLS), and will leave with a broader knowledge of drug impairment indicators.
